Maximum Verstappen

Max Verstappen is in peak-Max-Verstappen mode. With a win in Malaysia and pole position for the Singapore GP Sprint, it feels like we're seeing a streak of that '22-'23 dominant driver. Max gave us a glimpse of this last season with his late-season charge at Lando; he's in his zone, "Peakstappen."

There is a difference between having the fastest car on the grid and being the fastest driver on the grid. Right now, Max Verstappen is making that distinction hard to ignore.

Fresh off his first win of the season in Malaysia and a four-race podium streak, Verstappen has carried that momentum into Singapore and secured pole position for the Sprint. The results suggest we're seeing familiar form from the most dominant driver of the 2020s, extracting performance from his Red Bull that may exceed what the machinery alone should deliver.

Mercedes clearly has the strongest car this season. The performance gap was much larger at the start of the season, but it has narrowed slightly. While Kimi is likely to secure the drivers' title in the next two to three races, the constructors' title is essentially already decided.

The battle for the second-best car is more complex. At one point, McLaren's mid-season surge made them seem like the clear second-best team, if not the overall best, but that momentum did not last. Ferrari, on the other hand, has had a rollercoaster season: they gain an advantage, lose it, regain it, and then lose it again. One could argue that strategic decisions have hindered Ferrari's success more than the car's performance. Meanwhile, Red Bull has been steadily improving in the background, and at this level, Max Verstappen is getting the absolute most out of that car.

"Peakstappen" is about more than a return to form. It's about watching one of the sport's best drivers operate at his peak. If Verstappen can sustain this level, the rest of the grid has a problem. Because when Max is driving like this, the question isn't simply whether Red Bull has the fastest car. It's whether anyone else can match the driver behind the wheel.
